Sepia Saturday: Young Lad with Bicycle

It took me a while to find them in the old family albums, but here are two photos of my dad in his boyhood, first with a tricycle rather small for him, then a bicycle a bit big for him… I’m not sure exactly how old he was in either photo but he was born in 1931.

  2. HA -- I was going to ask if Peter Miebies is your father. But I see he's been here already and will miss the fun of my asking. Your dad is dressed so spiffy, and those glasses are great. I like your photos.

  4. A great response to this week's subject. I can still remenmber my tricycle. It meant so much to me when I was tiny.

  5. I expect he 'grew into' the second bike! Bikes meant freedom when we were young!

  6. A boy who is yet to grow into his hairstyle and his bike. Evocative photos, thanks for sharing them.

  7. The quality and detail in the photographs is outstanding. You obviously had a gifted photographer in the family.

  8. The large bike looks like a girls' bike, so I am wondering whether he had an older sister.

    1. My dad had neither sisters nor brothers; and I have no evidence or memory of my grandmother ever using a bike. But I suppose it might have been bought as a family bike, and/or second hand. The photo must be from the WWII years, so no luxuries to be expected...

  9. Wharever happened to the bells that were on bikes years ago? Two fine photos for us to study. How narrow where the wheels on his tricycle.

  11. Two excellent photos for the theme. Bicycles (and tricycles) offer that first taste of freedom, which is a universal joy no matter the decade or country.
