On the Beach Again - Sepia Saturday 772

The original size of this photo is only 5.5 x 8 cm, and I had no idea who the people were. Having scanned and enlarged it, I think the woman and the man to the left are probably my grandmother's sister Hildur and her  husband Olle - the same couple that we also saw on a beach in my post for Sepia Saturday 770 - but then in swimsuits! I'm not sure about the identity of the man to the right, but because of other photos in the same envelope, I think it may be their friend Evert (cf my post for SS 768). From the background scenery, it looks to me like the lake could be the one close to where Hildur and Olle, and my grandparents Sally and Gustaf, lived after they got married (1930-). (But there may of course be other lakes offering similar scenery that I'm not familiar with.)

Svenska:

  1. Good match to the prompt photo! And I appreciate your efforts to find identities of the people, which are always a fun proposition.

    1. Barbara, I see the old photos as pieces of the "family history puzzle", so to try and identify people and places is really my main purpose. Trying to also find photos to match with Sepia Saturday is helpful when it comes to actually getting round to it, though - and write things down... ;-)

  2. Very nice match to the prompt. What they're wearing is kind of interesting. One fellow in a suit, the rather casually attired & 'probably Hildur' in an outfit that could go comfortably either way. :) Lucky some of the pictures in the same envelope were identified so you could make a good guess as to who the third fellow in the photo might have been. As to the lake, it probably would have helped if the picture was in color - maybe? But hopefully another good guess.

    1. Gail, even from my own childhood I recall "Uncle Olle" as always properly dressed in a suit when he came for dinner or coffee at my grandparents' house. I suppose he must have had work clothes (he was a carpenter), but I doubt he owned any "semi-casual" outfits. From old photos I have gathered that both Hildur and my grandmother Sally did what they could to keep up with fashion in their youth - even if that was not exactly my impression of them in my childhood, when they were in their 60s/70s... - As for the lake, it looks like the lake and beach that I know; I just can't rule out that there may be other places looking similar. It would make no difference if it was a colour photo.

  3. Indeed, a very nice match for our theme. It only needs a child in the background skipping stones on the water. I find their clothing curious for a walk along a lake. They are definitely not going fishing. I wonder if behind the camera person is a lakeside hotel or cafe where they have stopped to have a meal. The young man's plus fours might even be set for a game of golf.

    1. Mike, in the early 1930s Hildur and Olle were sharing a house with my grandparents + Hildur's and Sallys mother. (A few years later they were able to build their own house close by.) They lived 5-10 minutes walk from a lake with just the kind of scenery seen in this photo. I think Olle and Hildur are just wearing "Sunday clothes", while their friend seems dressed for driving. If it is Evert, he lived about 30 km drive away. Whether he came for dinner (nowadays we'd call it lunch), or perhaps just afternoon coffee, afterwards it would be natural for them to go for a stroll down to the lake to stretch their legs. Olle and Hildur never had a car, and even my grandfather Gustaf did not get one until after WWII. (They also lived very close to a railway stop.)

  4. A lovely photo and excellent match for the prompt. I love that everyone is dressed up at the beach. Makes you wonder if they were gathered for some special occasion, or perhaps just a Sunday, so nicer clothes were required. Or perhaps they just wanted a full-dress photo to complement the other one in swim suits. Whatever the reason, a grand photo and even grander that you can identify the subjects.
