G.033.03 - A View from Minnesota (1906)

Käre bror! Jag skall endast sända dig en vy från Minnesota och tala om att jag är här och har det ganska trefligt. Jag önskar du vore här. Jag reser till Chicago den 31 igen. / Syster Gerda

Den här vyn är ej mycke vacker men det finns, jag skall sända dig någon mer sedan.

Kommentar: Efter att Gerda slutat sin förra anställning i slutet av juni 1906 (enligt vykortet G.033.01), reste hon alltså tydligen till Minnesota. Om detta var för ett tillfälligt arbete där eller en semesterresa framgår inte. Jag kommer dock att tänka på ett foto som finns av Gerda med en grupp andra unga kvinnor i tjänsteflicksuniform, som tyder på att hon vid någon tidpunkt måste ha arbetat på något slags hotell eller pensionat beläget vid en sjö. Se inlägg från 2012-11-30 The Maids of the Lake - "Jungfrurna vid sjön". Kanske detta kan ha varit i Minnesota? Jag söker på "New London" (poststämpeln på detta kort) och finner att staden numera kallas "The City on the Pond". Kläderna på fotona verkar också stämma med 1906; liksom att vi nu vet att Gerda denna sommar nyss hade avslutat en annan anställning, och senare samma höst skulle komma att börja ett nytt arbete i Chicago, som skulle komma att sträcka sig flera år framåt.

Det finns ytterligare ett gruppfoto med samma kvinnor + ett par till, som troligen är taget samma år och plats (men inte vid sjön). Jag bifogar båda fotona här nedan, för jämförelses skull.

This view is not very beautiful but there are [some], I'll send you another one later. 

Comment: So it seems that after leaving her previous employment in Chicago at the end of June (cf. G.033.01), Gerda went to Minnesota. Whether for a temporary job or for a holiday, the card does not reveal. However, a photo of Gerda comes to mind for me, which shows her together with a group of other young women in maids' uniforms, near a lake, suggesting that at some point (and in summer) she must have worked for a while at some kind of hotel or similar establishment. See my post from 2012-11-30 The Maids of the Lake. Perhaps this was in Minnesota? I look up "New London" (where this postcard was sent from) and find that nowadays, this town is called "The City on the Pond". The clothes they are wearing on the photo seem to fit with 1906; plus we now know that Gerda was actually between other employments that summer.

This is the photo that back in 2012 I blogged about as "The Maids of the Lake". Gerda is the one sitting on the tree stump on the right.
